Setting the perfect Christmas dining table

Setting the perfect Christmas dining table

No matter how you’re spending this Christmas, a beautifully set dining table is at the heart of the festivities. After all, if you’ve spent hours preparing Christmas dinner, you want a table that is worthy of the work you have put in! With just a little prep, you can be sure that your dining table is dressed to impress this Christmas.

Start with the centrepiece

A centrepiece can be as subtle or as dramatic as you want it to be, and will help to guide the overall aesthetic for your dining table. Start with a runner – try luxurious fabrics like velvet or silk if you’re going for all-out glamour – and then start to layer up your table from there.

Traditional holly or ivy garlands and pillar candles are a classic festive staple, or you could mix it up with tall, elegant taper candles and flower displays – let your creativity and personal style run wild.

A few pointers, though – try not to overcrowd your table, as you’ll need extra space to put side dishes and other crockery, and make sure your guests can actually see each other over your centrepiece!

Create your place settings

A Christmas dining table should feel extra special, so even your plates should get an upgrade! Start with a charger or placemat underneath your dinner plates – go for metallics or contrasting colours if you’re feeling bold – and add matching soup bowls on top. Lay out your cutlery as if you’re in a fancy restaurant, with a dessert spoon and fork just at the top of the plate. For a dramatic flourish, try learning some napkin folding techniques, or just complete with some elegant napkin rings.

If you’re having a few guests over, personalised place settings can add an extra memorable touch, whether you’re writing their names on baubles or even just using simple name cards.

Get the drinks flowing

Once you know which drinks you’ll be serving, you’ll be able to add the appropriate glassware to your table – just give it a quick polish first to get it gleaming. If you have a bar cart, or even a side table, now is the time to bring it over to your dining table so that you have everything handy. Add an ice bucket to keep your drinks chilled and voila, you don’t even need to leave the table to get more drinks!

Make sure you have enough space

Your Christmas may be slightly smaller this year, but you may be surprised at how much space you’ll still need to host your dinner. Always make sure to set your table a few weeks ahead of time just as a dry run to check how much room you have and see if you’ll need to make any adjustments to your table décor to get everything to fit, and if everyone will be able to sit comfortably around the table.
